Roots of Wisdom: Hendrik van Rheede, born in 1636 in Utrecht, Holland, began his career as an officer in the Dutch East India Company (VOC), where he played a key role in military campaigns on the Malabar Coast and in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) against the Portuguese.
His administrative acumen and diplomatic skills earned him the position of Governor of Malabar. Van Rheede’s tenure as Governor immersed him in the cultural and natural wealth of the region.
Located in Cheruthuruthy, Thrissur District, Kerala, this 27-acre garden draws inspiration from the 17th-century Hortus Malabaricus, the monumental botanical work by Dutch commander Hendrik van Rheede.

Such a nice place in the midst of a dense garden, so many varieties of trees, aquatic plants, an open butterfly garden.
It was a privilege to meet the team. I enjoyed my stay immensely at the Gardens; It’s a hidden gem.
